Once upon a time there used to be a short Jewish man named Yitschak.
Due to the fact that he was small he was named Yitschayek in the Arab language.
It is not completely known if or when he or his descendants lived in Sefarad/Portugal or when they arrived in Baghdad after the expulsion from Jerusalem.
What we do know is that some of his descendants became great Rabbis.
One of them named Rabbi Ezra Sasoon Yitschayek ZT´´L, our great grandfather.
His name was comprised of the Hebrew words ´Ezra´ and ´Sasoon´´.
This special man was helpful (Ezra) to the Jews in the city and far away in each and every aspect of life.
He would travel to far away places for days volunteering to do circumcisions and other important matters.
In addition, he did so in a joyful way (Sasoon).
His title was not just Rabbi, but also ''Chacham'' to emphasize his greatness:
''Chacham Rabenu Sasoon Ezra Itshayek''
Our Synagogue is is a new beginning of the Jewish revival in the Algarve and that must be celebrated by a meaningful name.
A name in remembrance of a great and inspiring man, the ''Chacham'' Ezra Sasoon.
A name that reminds us that if we all help each other (Ezra) and all live in joy and happiness (Sasoon) we will surely achieve unity and Achdut.
